Central Florida’s Visitor Information Center (CFVIC) will celebrate baseball by hosting its 12th Annual Spring Training Celebration day on Saturday, February 16, 2019. This free, family-friendly event will take place from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., featuring prize giveaways, a batting cage game and a pitching booth with speed timer. CFVIC will be giving away commemorative event T-shirts to the first 300 visitors, once the event begins at 8 a.m. (one per person, while supplies last). Attendees will have the chance to register for a grand prize: four tickets to see the Tigers play a Spring Training game at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium. In addition, visitors who bring canned goods (for donation to local food banks) will have the chance to enter a special drawing for attractions tickets. Attendees will receive one free LEGOLAND® Florida Resort or Bok Tower Gardens ticket for each one (of the same) purchased at CFVIC on the day of the event. Note: the “buy one, get one” special on tickets is limited to the first 200 tickets sold. CFVIC attraction ticket prices are already discounted, making this an especially attractive offer.
Spring training fans can pick up the latest information on the 2019 Spring Training season such as schedules and Spring Training guides. The Detroit Tigers are celebrating their 83rd Spring Training season at TigerTown in Lakeland, extending the longest-standing relationship between a major league team and a current Spring Training host city. The 2019 spring season marks the club’s 54th consecutive season of exhibition play at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium.
For more information on the Spring Training Celebration day, call 863-420-2586.
In addition to assisting visitors, and residents (by providing tourism information about Polk County), CFVIC also sells discounted attraction tickets for many Central Florida attractions (including LEGOLAND Florida Resort) and hosts a seasonal Farmers Market on Thursdays, through the end of April. The information center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week (excluding major holidays), and is located at 101 Adventure Court, Davenport, FL 33837 (along U.S. Highway 27), a half-mile south of I-4 at Exit 55.

Fly In
Feb 16 @ 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and the City of Groveland and Osborn Airfield are feeling the love – for flying. Jon and Darlene Osborn, the airport owners, are partnering with the city to host a Love Is in the Air Fly-in at the 3700-ft. grass airfield in Groveland, on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Pilots and people who love flying – and others who are just curious about airplanes — are invited to the free fly-in that includes a barbecue lunch and a chance to look at dozens of airplanes.
“But mostly, fly-ins are about socializing,” said Darlene Osborn.
The last fly-in at the airport was in 2015 to celebrate the airfield’s 50th anniversary. That event drew about 75 aircraft and 300-plus people.
“We will celebrate Valentine’s and the love we have for our hometown, Groveland, as well as the flying community,” said Darlene Osborn.
For the City of Groveland, it’s a chance to show off one of three airfields in the Groveland area. City officials believe that transportation will play an increasingly important role in the future and that the Osborn Airfield could be a catalyst for economic development.
The Osborns purchased the airfield in 2004. Currently, it is one of the largest, private, grass runways in Central Florida. Most of the use comes from local business owners and commercial pilots with personal planes. Osborn said some of the Orlando and Apopka flight schools use the airfield for training.
Jon Osborn thinks there is more interest than ever in aviation.
“We did studies to determine the pilot population in the south Lake County area, and we listed nearly 6,000 pilots,” Osborn said. “Even though many pilots are inactive, their appreciation of aviation, and all things airplane, will bring them out to a local fly-in,” he said.
To RSVP, or find out more details, call Darlene Osborn, at 352-250-4545.

Ribs on the Ridge
Feb 22 @ 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Haines City is getting ready for its 11th Annual “Ribs on the Ridge” BBQ competition, February 22- 23 at Lake Eva Park and we are raising the bar amid Polk County’s BBQ competition event entertainment.
This year’s headliner is national recording artist Craig Campbell, who has cracked the Top 15 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart for “Family Man” and “Outta My Head.” He is a regular on the Grand Ole Opry and has appeared on NBC’s Today. Campbell is slated to take the stage on Friday night at 7:30 PM.
The Florida BBQ Association sanctioned event will serve as a qualifier for the Jack Daniels World Championship, and the American Royal Invitational. Admission & parking is free, and live entertainment is featured throughout the event. Public entry is 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM on Friday, February 22 and 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM Saturday, February 23.
Attendees of Ribs on the Ridge can expect to over-indulge in tasting endless varieties of BBQ after purchasing “Rib Bucks,” dollar for dollar. Beer and wine will be available for purchase.
This year Haines City Parks and Recreation has collaborated with kidsPACK, a non-profit organization supported by individuals who are committed to improving the lives and opportunities of disadvantaged, homeless and hungry children. KidsPACK turns everyday backpacks into a food transportation module stocked with nutritious, child- friendly and easy to prepare food for children to eat over the weekend and times when they are away from school.
Ribs on the Ridge BBQ competition teams, sponsors and the general public have been challenged by Parks & Recreation to compete with one another in donations to support these efforts. The project serves three surrounding counties, including Polk County, where they feed more than 1,700 children in 73 different schools. Unfortunately, there are 7,000 registered homeless, hungry children attending our local county schools. This issue is a genuinely devastating and real concern in our local communities that we wish to rectify.
For more information about the event, entertainment or donations for kidsPACK, please contact the Haines City Parks and Recreations Department at (863) 421-3700.
