What
do you Know About Varicose Veins?
Many people look at their legs and see those small spidery veins
or the larger bumpy veins and think, when I have a little extra
money, Ill take care of those. Well, the good news is, you may not
have to wait until you have a little extra money! With a simple
diagnostic ultrasound (which is covered by insurance), it can be
determined whether those unsightly veins are a cosmetic or medical
condition. The big question is where to start???
We specialize in a wide array of venous conditions which will be
evaluated and treated by a board certified surgeon. Common conditions
that are treated include varicose veins, spider veins, chronic venous
insufficiency, deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and venous stasis ulcerations.
The treatment options of venous disease include conservative measures
such as compression stocking therapy, sclerotherapy and minimally-invasive
radio-frequency ablation on incompetent veins.
Laser, or radio-frequency ablation, is rapidly replacing vein stripping
as the treatment of choice for venous insufficiency. Utilizing a
small needle puncture in the skin, a catheter is inserted into the
vein at the level of the knee. The catheter employs heat to close
the vein from the groin to the knee region. The procedure is performed
in an office-based operating room and can be done with local anesthetic.
There is minimal pain or bruising. Vein ablation is usually performed
in conjunction with follow-up sclerotherapy for the treatment of
the residual veins.
