As the weather gets colder up north both our human and avian snowbirds return to Florida. Migratory birds make their winter home in a rookery located on the shores of Trout Lake. Hundreds of birds return to this rookery each evening and then leave in the morning.
It is a glorious sight to see the sun climbing behind the rookery which often signals the morning activities to begin. To allow bird enthusiasts, photographers and just plain early morning folk to enjoy this unique sight, Trout Lake Nature Center is offering several Daybreak Birding events on December 19, 22, 27, and 29 and January 3 and 5 starting at 6:30 AM.
Bring your binoculars, spotting scope or camera. Loaner binoculars are available, if needed. Dress for the weather. Gates open at 6:30 AM and the walk to the lake will begin at 6:45. Ending time is based on the birds’ departure and may vary due to weather conditions. Most birds are gone about 1 hour after sunrise.
TLNC is located at 520 East CR 44, Eustis, FL. Cost to attend is $5 and includes a continental breakfast with coffee, tea, hot chocolate or juice.
