GFWC Four Corners Jr. Woman's Club

Thursday, September 2, 2010

The GFWC Four Corners Jr. Woman's Club hosted a presentation by Lily Romine, Executive Director, Junior Achievement for Polk and Highlands County. Her daughter Sara Romine, a JA student, and Marcy Reed, a Disney Voluntear for JA at Horizons Elementary School, explained the need for volunteers in the Davenport area. Junior Achievement teaches the value of education and life skills. In elementary schools, volunteers commit to a 5-week program, spending 30 minutes in the classroom each week. Clubwomen are enthusiastic about helping schoolchildren in the Four Corners area.

Kristine Duncan presented a GFWC membership certificate and pin to new Club woman BJ Flowers. The Woman's Club hopes to support several groups through fundraisers this year - Feral Cat Fanciers, American Cancer Society 2011 Walk, Green Bag Project to supply weekend food for school children, and Kids Need To Read in cooperation with Loughman Oaks Elementary School. Several bags of school supplies were collected for A Gift For Teaching of Osceola, Free Teacher Market of Polk County, and Loughman Oaks Elementary School in partnership with Community of Faith Church. Over $1.7 million worth of coupons have been collected in support of military families overseas in the Club's "Coups For Troops" effort.

Our next meeting is Wednesday, September 15. Members will be working on a "pet" fundraising project to sew bandanas and scrunchies for sale at the High Vista Craft Show in October. For information on the chapter's monthly luncheon meeting ($5 donation for lunch please) at Community of Faith Church in Davenport, please visit the website www.gfwcfourcorners.org.
