Alliance to Protect Water Resources

Friday, December 2, 2011

The Alliance To Protect Water Resources, Inc. is pleased to have Mr. Jim Thomas, of Friends of Lake Apopka, present a program on Lake Apopka at our next meeting Thursday, December 8th. Lake Apopka has experienced dramatic changes to its environmental health over the past century. A once beautiful and productive lake, Lake Apopka was then the second largest lake in Florida, and became an acclaimed fishing paradise that people came from all over the world to enjoy. Over the last 40 years the degradation from agricultural and industrial uses of the lake and surrounding land gave the lake a new noteriety as the most polluted lake in Florida. Restoration began with the formation of Friends of Lake Apopka in 1991, followed by purchases of large tracts of land surrounding the Lake by the State to reclaim and restore its once pristine and plentiful waters.

Many organizations and government agencies are now part of the restoration efforts ongoing at Lake Apopka.

Please join us on December 8th to learn about the history of this local resource and all the restoration efforts underway. Our meeting begins at 7pm at Jenkins Auditorium in Clermont, is free and the public is welcome. Check out our Facebook page for more information on local water issues!

Call 352-394-1839 or 352-429-1042 for additional information.
