Wheelchair Drive
Friday, October 21, 2011
The residents of Sunridge Woods, in Davenport, will be holding their 2nd Annual Fall Fest and Chili Cook-off on Saturday, October 29th. They will also have a safety and wellness fair along with a wheelchair drive. The residents have partnered up with Wheels For The World (WFTW) to collect used wheelchairs. WFTW is part of the Joni and Friends International Disability Ministry. Joni Eareckson Tada was only 17 in 1967 when she became a quadriplegic; a result of a diving accident. In 1979 she began her ministry and in 1994 Joni started WFTW.
WFTW collects used manual wheelchairs and then sends them to the various correctional facilities throughout the US where inmates restore the wheelchairs to like-new condition. Then missionaries and specialists take the chairs to countries such as Peru, Romania, Ghana, Poland and China. In these countries, and others, the average cost of a wheelchair equals a years' wages. The specialists fit the chairs to the recipients and give them a bible in their own language.
WFTW also accepts pediatric wheelchairs and aluminum canes, crutches and walkers -unfortunately no electric wheelchairs or scooters. If you have any of these items and would like to donate them to a worthwhile charity, please contact Gary at wheels4corners@yahoo.com. Receipts for tax purposes will be provided.
