Polk County Students and Schools Place in Top Ten in State Citrus Evaluation Contest

Two Polk County high school students, five high schools and three middle schools have placed in the top ten in the Florida Citrus Evaluation contest. The Florida Future Farmers of America (FFA) competition was held in the areas of Tool Identification and Citrus Identification for individuals, high schools and middle schools.
In Individual competition, Nicole Green of Kathleen High took first place honors with 205 points, and Michael Gary of Kathleen High came in third place with 202 points.
The top ten Polk County winners in the high school competition are: #2 Kathleen; #5 George Jenkins; #6 Haines City; #9 Lake Wales; #10 Auburndale.
The top ten Polk County winners in the middle school competition are: #2 Dundee Ridge; #9 Westwood; #10 McLaughlin.
The judging was held Nov. 17 at the Florida FFA Leadership Training Center in Haines City.
A total of 25 high school teams and 24 middle school teams from throughout Florida gathered to compete for the top spot. The purpose of the Citrus Evaluation contest is to stimulate learning activities in the production and management of citrus fruit.
