LSSC Lakehawk Volleyball Makes History by Heading to National Championship after Regionals Win

Lake-Sumter State College’s Women’s Volleyball team defeated top-seeded Pasco-Hernando State College to win the Region 8 Championship game recently.
The team now advances to the NJCAA Division II National Championship in Charleston, WV. This marks the first time in College history that an athletics team has advanced to a NJCAA national tournament.
“I am so proud of this team. The amount of heart I saw this weekend was immeasurable,” said Head Coach Amanda Phelps. “This group has worked so hard to get to this point and deserve every accolade they received. West Virginia, here we come!”
“This is such a great accomplishment for our volleyball team,” added Mike Matulia, LSSC athletic director. “We are proud of our players, coaching staff, and support team for making this season so memorable. I am proud to see the entire LSSC community supporting our team in this historic accomplishment.”
Thanks to her strong performance throughout the tournament, Emma Gray, an LSSC sophomore from Fruitland Park and a graduate of First Academy of Leesburg, was selected as the Region 8 Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
Sixteen teams will head to Charleston, WV, for the national tournament on Nov. 15 to 17. Ticket information and game times will be available later this week. All games are streamed live on NJCAA TV at njcaatv.com.
“On behalf of the College community, we are proud of our student-athletes and their outstanding effort this season,” said. Dr. Stan Sidor, president of LSSC. “They have shown great persistence and character throughout a challenging season. We wish them the best of luck as they travel to West Virginia next week, and know that they will make LSSC proud.”
