Manatee sightings in Lake County are no longer a rare thing. Over the past two years, a female manatee has made the Harris Chain of Lakes her home. “Leesburg” is the name given to this first female sighted in Lake Harris near the City of Leesburg in 2015. Since that time, at least two other manatees have been reported in the Chain.
Ms. Leesburg seems to be very happy with her new home as she has just become a mother for the very first time. The calf, born in July, will stay very close to its mother for the first two years of its life. Mom will be teaching her baby everything it needs to know to survive including where to travel to find the best aquatic plants and warm water during cold snaps. Also, Mom needs your help in naming the new calf. What do you think the baby should be named? Keep in mind that we don’t know if it’s a boy or girl yet. Submit your name suggestion for the Baby Manatee to the Lake County Water Authority at www.lcwa.org.
Check out our new webpage at www.LCWA.org for additional information on Leesburg the Manatee. On the site you can name the baby manatee, post sighting information, view images and monitor tracking information.
