Road to China…Attabad Lake, Part 2

Posted on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 1:04 am

My name is Dr. Zaffar. I am an Internal Medicine Physician and my clinic is located in the Publix Plaza in front of Reunion. We offer primary care and aesthetics services like Botox, fillers, laser hair removal and removal of spider veins.
We were up early to cross the most dangerous part of the journey, the newly formed Attabad Lake (after the land slide) but reaching the lake was not that easy. We reached the lake around 9.30 a.m. and we knew it was too late because it becomes a wind tunnel as the day passes by.
We parked our car on the side and went on primitive wooden boats to cross. As soon as we left the shore the engine of the boat stopped working and were stranded in middle of lake. The only thing I was trying to figure out was how I was going to swim to shore in the lake which is 2300 feet deep with huge waves like an ocean! At last, with lots of prayers, the motor started and after 1.5 hours we reached the other side, where we rented a jeep and started the last part of our journey to China.
It was a 4 hour drive and it was one of the most dangerous drives we did. In some places the river was cutting into the narrow road. China’s engineers have to fix the torn road almost daily from all the land slides. More than 15 days of the month this road is closed due to land sliding. After a tiring 4 hour journey at last we reached and entered China. This was the most exciting part of the journey – everyone was dancing. After 2 weeks of driving we crossed the border at the height of 16,000 feet. Even in August there was snow all over the place.
